Stephen Douglas Allan was born in Melbourne, Australia, on 18 October 1973. His parents had emigrated from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Australia in 1970. He attended St John’s school in Dandenong, Victoria, and won the 1991 Victorian Boys Championship before turning professional in 1996. Allan’s early development was shaped by Australian golf and by watching Greg Norman at the 1983 Australian Masters. Right-handed and listed at approximately 1.80 metres and 83 kilograms, he built his career as a touring professional known for persistence and longevity. Allan played on the PGA Tour of Australasia from 1996 and joined the European Tour in 1997.
