Charlize Jayde Rule

Charlize Jayde Rule is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Brighton & Hove Albion in England and the Australia women’s national team. Born in Sydney on 16 February 2003, she developed through Queens Park FC, Football NSW Institute and Sydney University FC before establishing herself with Sydney FC. Rule moved to Brighton in July 2023 after helping Sydney FC win three consecutive A-League Women Premierships and the 2022–23 Championship. She was selected for Australia’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 squad and has also represented Australia at under-17 and under-20 level.

Charlize Jayde Rule was born in Sydney, New South Wales, on 16 February 2003. She began playing football after following her older brother Bailey into the sport and developed through Queens Park FC, Football NSW Institute and Sydney University FC. Her early pathway included Australian junior national-team involvement, with Rule representing Australia at under-17 and under-20 level and being identified as a versatile defender who could operate centrally or in wide defensive positions.

Rule joined Sydney FC’s senior setup and made her A-League Women debut during the 2020–21 season. Over three seasons with the Sky Blues, she became part of one of the competition’s most successful teams. Sydney FC won the Premiership in 2020–21, 2021–22 and 2022–23, while Rule also helped the club win the 2022–23 Championship. Sydney FC reported that she finished her time at the club with 45 appearances and three goals.

Her first major professional move came in July 2023, when she transferred to Brighton & Hove Albion on a long-term deal. Brighton described her as a full-back, while later club coverage documented her development into a centre-back. Rule scored her first Brighton goal in October 2023 during a League Cup victory over Birmingham City. She made 11 appearances in all competitions during her first season and signed a new contract in August 2024.

At international level, Rule was first called into a senior Australia camp in late 2021 before making her Matildas debut against Canada in Victoria, British Columbia, on 1 December 2023. She was selected in Australia’s squad for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026, her first major senior tournament. The official Matildas profile lists her as Australian cap number 225 and records eight senior appearances without a goal on the profile’s latest update.

Rule’s playing role has broadened during her Brighton career. She has been used as a right-sided defender and has also developed as a centre-back, with the club highlighting her athleticism, aerial ability, defensive positioning, progressive passing and willingness to support attacks. Her career was interrupted by a serious hip injury that kept her out for much of the 2024–25 season. She returned during the following campaign and was recognised by Brighton as the club’s Young Player of the Year in May 2026.
