Amy Joan Irene Sayer

Amy Joan Irene Sayer is an Australian international midfielder from Sydney who plays for Malmö FF in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan. A technically accomplished attacking midfielder, she developed through Northbridge FC, Football NSW pathways and Sydney University before progressing to Canberra United, Sydney FC, Stanford University, San Francisco Glens SC and Kristianstads DFF. Sayer made her senior Australia debut at 16 in 2018, endured an ACL injury that ruled her out of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and returned to become part of Australia’s 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign.

Born in Sydney on 30 November 2001, Sayer began playing football with Northbridge FC before entering the Football NSW development pathway. She also played for Sydney University, then earned her first opportunity in Australia’s top domestic competition with Canberra United during the 2017–18 season. Her versatility was evident early: she was used as an attacking midfielder and on the left wing, while also undertaking deeper midfield roles for national youth teams. Sayer scored in her first A-League Women season and later joined Sydney FC, where she won the Australian championship in her first season with the club. She remained involved with Australia’s youth national teams and was selected for the senior Matildas at only 16 years of age. Her senior debut came against Japan at the 2018 Tournament of Nations in Chicago. In 2020, Sayer moved to the United States to study at Stanford University and play college football. She completed a degree in human biology and philosophy while representing the Stanford Cardinal. She later played for San Francisco Glens SC in the USL W League before moving to Sweden in 2023 to join Kristianstads DFF. At Kristianstad, she established herself as a creative and versatile midfielder. A serious ACL injury suffered in April 2024 interrupted her progress and ended her hopes of Olympic selection, but she completed a recovery lasting more than a year and returned to international football in 2025. In 2026, she represented Australia at her first major senior tournament, the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, scoring against Iran, and was subsequently reported by Football Australia as the MVP of the 2026 FIFA Series in Kenya. Ahead of the 2026 season, Sayer signed a three-year contract with Malmö FF, where she wears number 21 and is listed as a midfielder. Her most recent professional context is Malmö FF’s Damallsvenskan and UEFA Women’s Champions League campaigns, alongside continued selection for the Matildas.
