Three appearances after a four-month quad lay-off have moved Patrick Yazbek beyond the comeback headline. Nashville SC are now managing his workload while relying on his running and progression during a demanding stretch of the MLS season.
The comeback has become a workload question
Patrick Yazbek has not simply returned to Nashville SC’s midfield; he has quickly become part of the club’s plan for managing a stretched squad. The more significant evidence has followed. Yazbek started Nashville’s 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew on August 23 and played 62 minutes, then began again in Sunday’s 4-0 win against FC Cincinnati before being replaced by Matthew Corcoran after 62 minutes. Why the minutes matter
Nashville’s results show that the team has coped without Yazbek. The club’s 4-0 win over Cincinnati on August 29 lifted its record to 16 wins, two losses and four draws, the best 22-match regular-season start in MLS history. That record makes Yazbek’s return less about rescuing a failing midfield and more about increasing the number of ways Nashville can control matches. The club described him as one of its hardest runners and best ball-progressors before the injury, while identifying his partnership with Edvard Tagseth as one of MLS’s more effective midfield combinations. The value is not captured by his nine-for-nine passing cameo alone: Yazbek offers the repeated movement and forward-carrying that can connect Nashville’s deeper midfield to its attacking line without forcing Hany Mukhtar or the wide players to drop too far toward the ball. His role against Cincinnati illustrated the balance. Yazbek operated in the midfield structure alongside Tagseth, helped Nashville maintain its control through the first hour, and then made way for Corcoran with the match already moving toward a comfortable result. The substitution was not a sign that he had failed to influence the game; it was evidence that Nashville could protect a returning starter without sacrificing the team’s shape or result.
Depth is being tested even when results are not
The timing remains important because Nashville’s injury list has affected several parts of the squad. The club’s own August preview noted that its depth had been tested by injuries and schedule congestion, with Yazbek and Cristian Espinoza particularly missed for their industry and creativity. Yazbek therefore gives head coach B.J. Callaghan a different solution from simply adding another body. Corcoran and Tagseth covered the position during the absence, but Yazbek’s ability to run beyond the first pressure line changes the tempo of Nashville’s build-up. That matters in the play-offs as opponents become more effective at denying the first pass and forcing midfielders to receive under pressure.
The next interruption is not medical
The immediate complication is that Yazbek’s comeback will now be interrupted by suspension rather than injury. MLS confirmed that he will miss Nashville’s regular-season matches against Orlando City on August 31 and Atlanta United on September 14 after receiving a two-match suspension for violating the league’s Non-Discrimination Policy. That ruling changes the short-term shape of his return. Yazbek has played 20, 62 and 62 minutes across his three appearances since the injury, giving Nashville a useful sample of his physical reintegration before the enforced absence. The club will now have to preserve that progress through training rather than match exposure, then decide whether to rebuild his minutes gradually when he becomes available again.
The broader development is still positive for Nashville. Yazbek has moved from being unavailable during the club’s Champions Cup run and Australia’s 2026 World Cup campaign to starting twice in a team setting historic MLS pace. His return is no longer a question of whether he can contribute. It is a question of how Callaghan can deploy him often enough to restore Nashville’s midfield balance without asking too much of a player who has only just completed a long rehabilitation.
