Catley’s first major break was her senior Melbourne Victory debut in October 2009 at age 15. Her breakthrough as an elite defender followed her positional switch from midfield to defence during the 2011–12 season, after which she was recognised as Melbourne Victory’s Female Footballer of the Year and became a prominent Australian youth and senior international.
Catley has been recognised as the W-League Young Player of the Year, twice named Football Federation Australia Female U20 Footballer of the Year, selected in multiple W-League Teams of the Season and named Professional Footballers Australia Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2020, 2024 and 2025 according to available reporting. At the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup she started all five of Australia’s matches at left-back and played all 450 minutes; the Australian Olympic Committee records eight tackles won, 12 interceptions, 13 duels won and 72.4% passing accuracy in that tournament.
Her defining international moment was the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. After Sam Kerr was ruled out shortly before Australia’s opening match, Catley took on the captain’s armband and helped lead the Matildas to their first World Cup semi-final. She also scored against the Republic of Ireland during the tournament. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Catley scored twice and assisted twice in Australia’s 6–5 win over Zambia, according to Opta Analyst.
