Aquilani’s selection problem is becoming constructive

The selection issue for Aquilani is not simply whether Volpato deserves praise. It is whether Sassuolo’s attack functions well enough with him on the pitch to justify sustained responsibility before the hierarchy becomes crowded again.

Berardi’s return remains central to that calculation. Sassuolo have not yet announced a permanent change in attacking hierarchy, and there is no verified indication that Volpato has been promised a guaranteed starting place. The confirmed development is narrower but still meaningful: under Aquilani, he has started both of the club’s opening competitive matches and scored in each. That makes continued selection a reasonable football question, not merely a reaction to one highlight.

If Volpato starts again after the international break and carries the same level of threat against stronger or more settled Serie A opponents, the discussion will move from early promise to structural importance. For now, Sassuolo have a productive selection problem — and Volpato is the reason it has arrived so quickly.
