Birrell exits US Open in three-set battle

Australian Kimberly Birrell was beaten by Ekaterina Alexandrova in the US Open Round of 64 in New York on 2 September 2026. Birrell lost 1-6 6-2 3-6, taking one set while dropping two. After a difficult opening set, she responded strongly in the second to level the match, winning it 6-2, but Alexandrova secured the deciding set 6-3 to complete the victory.
