Bob Shearer

Bob Shearer was an Australian professional golfer and golf-course architect whose career included victories on the PGA Tour, European Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia and European Senior Tour. Robert Alan Shearer was an Australian professional golfer from Melbourne, Victoria. He was associated with Southern Golf Club, where he developed as a junior and was coached by the club professional from his early teenage years. Shearer won the Australian Amateur Championship in 1969 and turned professional in 1971. His playing career combined success in Australia and New Zealand with extended periods on the European Tour and PGA Tour in the United States. He was recognised for his consistency, international competitiveness and all-round professional game, and later became a golf-course architect through Shearer Golf Design. Shearer won the PGA Tour of Australia Order of Merit four times, in 1974, 1977, 1981 and 1982. His defining professional season came in 1982: he won the Tallahassee Open for his sole PGA Tour title and later captured the Australian Open by four strokes over Jack Nicklaus and Payne Stewart. His best major result was a tie for seventh at the 1978 Open Championship at St Andrews. He also won twice on the European Tour in 1975 and four times on the European Senior Tour between 1998 and 2001. Shearer represented Australia in the World Cup in 1975 and 1976. Beyond competition, he served the Professional Golf Association of Australia, including as a life member, and worked as principal designer of Shearer Golf Design from 1993. He was appointed posthumously as a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to golf. Shearer died in Melbourne on 9 January 2022, aged 73.
