Born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 7 December 1990, Cameron Bairstow developed through Australia’s high-performance pathway after a late growth spurt and earned a place at the Australian Institute of Sport for the 2009–10 season. He then accepted a scholarship to the University of New Mexico in 2010. A physical, intelligent frontcourt player, Bairstow could operate as a power forward or centre, combining interior scoring, screening, rebounding and defensive effort with the ability to play away from the basket.
His major breakthrough came at New Mexico, where he progressed from a reserve role into one of the Mountain West Conference’s leading big men. In his senior season, 2013–14, he averaged 20.4 points and 7.4 rebounds in Euroleague’s historical statistical record and was named to the All-Mountain West first team. The Chicago Bulls selected him with the 49th overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, making him one of a small group of Australians drafted into the NBA.
