Broekhoff’s first major international break came at Valparaiso University, where he progressed from a supporting role into one of the Horizon League’s leading forwards. In his final college season he averaged approximately 16 points and more than seven rebounds per game, helping Valparaiso reach the NCAA Tournament. His senior-national-team breakthrough followed with Australia at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
NBA regular-season career: 59 games, 4.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game, with 40.3 per cent three-point shooting. For Australia’s senior national team, FIBA records list averages of 7.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game at the 2014 World Cup; 2.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 assist at the 2015 Oceania Championship; and 7.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists at the 2016 Olympic Games. Reported college honours include 2012 Horizon League Player of the Year and an honourable-mention All-American selection. He was also reported as an All-EuroCup First Team selection in 2018.
Broekhoff’s defining international moment was Australia’s fourth-place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Boomers defeated Lithuania in the quarter-final before losing to Serbia in the semi-final and Spain in the bronze-medal game, 89–88. He averaged 7.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists across eight Olympic games. His NBA career high was 17 points for Dallas against Golden State on 23 March 2019.
