Dante Exum

Danté Exum is an Australian professional basketball guard from Melbourne who was selected fifth overall by the Utah Jazz in the 2014 NBA Draft. Born in Melbourne, Victoria, on 13 July 1995, Danté Liman Exum developed through the Keilor Basketball Association before moving to Canberra and joining the Australian Institute of Sport basketball program. He also attended Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra. The son of former NBA player Cecil Exum, Danté was identified early as a high-level prospect and became the youngest player invited into the Australian Boomers' national squad at age 15. His early international breakthrough came with Australia's Under-17 team, which won silver at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship; Exum was selected in the tournament's All-Star Five. He later represented the Australian Emus at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, where Australia reached the semi-finals.

Exum entered the 2014 NBA Draft after the AIS pathway and was selected fifth overall by the Utah Jazz. A tall, athletic guard capable of handling the ball, defending multiple perimeter positions and attacking in transition, he played all 82 regular-season games as a rookie and was selected for the 2015 Rising Stars Challenge. He was selected again in 2017. His early NBA progression was interrupted by a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered while playing for Australia against Slovenia in October 2015, ruling him out of the 2016 Rio Olympics. He subsequently underwent shoulder surgery in 2017 and dealt with further lower-limb problems during his Utah tenure.

Utah traded Exum to the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2019-20 season. He later joined the Houston Rockets in January 2021, before moving to European basketball. His European career included FC Barcelona and Partizan, where he rebuilt his rhythm and reputation as a versatile two-way guard. He returned to the NBA by signing with Dallas in 2023.

With the Mavericks, Exum produced an efficient 2023-24 season as a rotation guard and helped Dallas reach the NBA Finals. His role included secondary ball-handling, spot-up shooting, point-of-attack defence and connective passing. He represented Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021, and at Paris 2024. At Tokyo, he was part of the Boomers team that won bronze, the nation's first men's Olympic basketball medal. At the latest verified point, Dallas remained his most recent professional team context, while injury limited his availability during 2024-25 and 2025-26.
