Welch’s first major break was his identification by Australian national coach Tony Harris and subsequent signing with the New York Mets organisation in 2005, aged 16. He made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Mets in 2007 and batted .288 in his first recorded professional season.

MiLB.com lists Welch as a 2010 Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star and a Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of 15 July 2013. Baseball Australia’s 2012–13 annual report states that Welch shared the Baseball Diamond Award for third base with Allan de San Miguel. Adelaide Bite career-leader figures reported after his retirement were 284 games, 258 hits, 160 runs, 35 home runs and 169 RBIs; these figures are retained as reported rather than independently recalculated.
Defining moments include signing with the New York Mets as a 16-year-old in 2005, reaching Double-A with the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Altoona Curve in 2012, winning a Carolina League Player of the Week award with the Salem Red Sox in July 2013, sharing the 2012–13 Baseball Diamond Award at third base, and representing Australia in international competition including the 2016 World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament and the 2017 World Baseball Classic squad.
