Samuel James Street was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and attended St Leonard’s College. He developed through Victorian baseball with Sandringham Baseball Club and Dingley Baseball, earning the O’Brian Medal and Allan Wills Memorial Club Champion Award after a reported 9–0 season with a 0.40 ERA in 81 innings in 2011. Street moved to the United States for college baseball, attending New Mexico Junior College before transferring to the University of Texas–Pan American. A right-handed pitcher who developed a low three-quarter or near-sidearm delivery, he was known for sink, control, durability and a breaking-ball/change-up mix.
