Durrington's first major professional breakthrough came when he signed with the California Angels as an amateur free agent in 1994, aged 18. His first MLB opportunity followed on 6 August 1999, when he debuted for Anaheim against Boston. MLB's official biography records that he became the seventh Australian-born player to appear in the majors and that he recorded a hit in each of his first five MLB games.
In five MLB seasons, Durrington recorded 235 at-bats, 46 hits, two home runs, nine RBIs, 14 stolen bases, a .196 batting average, .250 on-base percentage and .518 OPS. In 2005, he was selected as a Pacific Coast League All-Star with the Milwaukee Brewers' Triple-A Nashville affiliate after batting .300 with 61 runs and 30 stolen bases in 92 games. He was inducted into the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
Durrington's defining moments include his MLB debut for Anaheim on 6 August 1999; becoming the seventh Australian-born major leaguer; and his unusual pitching appearance for Milwaukee on 17 April 2004. He entered as a position player, remained in the game at third base and pitched one-third of an inning, becoming the only Australian position player identified in the available record as having pitched in an MLB game. In 2005 with Nashville, his straight steal of home against Iowa produced a ninth-inning walk-off win. He also delivered game-tying RBI singles for Milwaukee on consecutive days, 1 and 2 July 2005, against Pittsburgh. Durrington represented Australia at the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 and scored Australia's first run in WBC history.
