Blackley's first major professional breakthrough came in 2003 with the Double-A San Antonio Missions. He led the Texas League with 17 wins, finished with a 2.61 ERA and 144 strikeouts, was named Texas League Pitcher of the Year and earned selection to the 2003 MLB All-Star Futures Game.

He was named 2003 Texas League Pitcher of the Year, selected to the 2003 Futures Game and named the 2016 Mexican League Finals MVP.
His defining performances include his 2003 Futures Game selection, his MLB return season in 2012—when he went 6–4 with a 3.86 ERA in 24 games for Oakland—and his eight-scoreless-inning performance for Pericos de Puebla in the 2016 Mexican League championship clincher. He also made a notable start for Australia against Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, allowing one run over 5.2 innings.
