Martin Boyle’s goal and assist in Hibernian’s 2–1 win at Dundee showed why the veteran forward remains central to a side finding control and threat in the same attacking structure.

Boyle’s opener in the 25th minute was not a static winger’s finish. Hibs played a long pass towards Nathan Lowe, whose offside position caused Dundee’s defensive line to hesitate. Boyle attacked the space from deeper, collected the loose ball and finished calmly beyond Owen Goodman. Boyle’s influence continued after half-time. On 60 minutes, his cross from the right was deflected into Wright’s path for Hibernian’s second goal. The assist was less clean than the finish, but tactically it was just as relevant: Boyle had reached a crossing position early enough to put Dundee’s defensive block under stress before the visitors’ midfield runner arrived. The match also showed why Hibernian still need Boyle’s efficiency. So the immediate story is not that Boyle has carried Hibs into title contention, nor that one goal confirms a full return to peak form. It is that the Australian remains the clearest attacking reference in a team whose structure is beginning to look more coherent. His depth of movement creates separation, his pace threatens behind the line and his delivery can reward midfield runners arriving late.
That makes the upcoming Edinburgh derby against Hearts on Thursday, 3 September a sharper test of the same role. Dundee allowed Boyle to exploit hesitation in transition. Hearts should offer less room and more aggressive pressure.
