Brandan Bidois is back in the minors, but his Pittsburgh audition still matters

The Brisbane reliever’s first MLB stint ended with a July option, yet the Pirates’ decision to put him on their 40-man roster and give him a debut has created a meaningful next test for one of Australia’s newest big-league pitchers.

A debut, then a reset Brandan Bidois’ first Major League opportunity has not followed the straightforward path suggested by his remarkable 2025 minor-league season. The Brisbane right-hander made his MLB debut for Pittsburgh on May 13, becoming the first Australian-born player to appear for the Pirates. Bidois was an undrafted signing, converted from a position player into a pitcher, underwent Tommy John surgery and still reached the majors with a profile built on development rather than early top-prospect status. Pittsburgh has already shown enough belief to place him on the 40-man roster and use him in a major-league game. Bidois now has to give the club a reason to make the next decision harder: whether his improved command and competitive edge can turn a historic first appearance into a sustained MLB role.
