Cameron Johnston’s second Steelers chance is now a specialist test, not a comeback narrative

As Pittsburgh opens its 2026 preseason, Geelong-born punter Cameron Johnston has a clearer runway than he did a year ago — but the value of his return will be measured in field position, not sentiment.

A different starting point The 2026 NFL preseason is underway, with Pittsburgh’s opening game against Green Bay scheduled for Thursday, August 13 in the United States — Friday, August 14 in Australia. Johnston’s situation is materially different from last year. The Steelers signed him to a one-year contract on March 10 after a disrupted 2025 campaign in which he appeared in only four games across Buffalo and the New York Giants. The first preseason game should therefore be read narrowly. A few punts will not establish whether Johnston has fully regained his old level. The useful indicators will be directional: whether he consistently flips the field, whether his placement limits returns and whether Pittsburgh’s coverage unit can convert his punts into defensive field position. The Australian angle is understated but significant Johnston’s return is a different Australian NFL story from the international-player-pathway push and from Jordan Mailata’s continued development at offensive tackle. It is a veteran trying to restore a specialist role after the league briefly moved on without him. That distinction matters because Australian punters have often entered the NFL through a transition pathway; Johnston is now operating as an established professional whose job is to make the position boring again.
