Game #1 vs Spain

The Australian Boomers launched their Olympic campaign with an impressive 92-80 victory over Spain, marking a strong start to the tournament. The Boomers overcame a physical and intense game against Spain, securing an important win in their opening match.

Australia, fresh off their bronze medal performance in Tokyo, showcased their depth and skill in Lille on Saturday. Josh Giddey led the charge with 17 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, while Jock Landale contributed significantly with 20 points and nine rebounds. Despite Dante Exum being sidelined due to a dislocated finger, the Boomers managed to dominate the game.

Spain, without their legendary players Pau Gasol and Ricky Rubio, who had previously tormented the Boomers in crucial matches at the 2016 Olympics and the 2019 World Cup, brought a new-look team to Paris. However, the intense rivalry between the two teams was evident, as the game turned into a heated contest. This match was crucial in a pool that also includes medal hopefuls Canada and Greece.

Australia started the game with a strong performance. Dyson Daniels was effective at both ends of the court, scoring 13 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Josh Giddey made two long triples, and Jack McVeigh, a surprise selection, added 13 points and seven boards, including a smooth no-look assist in his first touch. The Boomers took an early lead, going up 18-7 after another bucket from Giddey and extending it to 38-17 when Spanish forward Usman Garuba was called for a moving screen on Josh Green.

A scuffle ensued after Will Magnay's light touch on Garuba, which led to technical fouls for both Garuba and Magnay. This incident set the tone for a contentious remainder of the game, with officials struggling to maintain control and calling 24 fouls in the first half alone. Despite the physicality, Nick Kay kept his composure even after a hard fall caused by Willy Hernangomez.

The Spanish bench was also penalized for excessive protesting, adding to the game's tension. Nevertheless, Josh Giddey's skill shone through, as he drove to the rim and finished strong, helping Australia to a 49-42 lead at halftime.

Santi Aldama led Spain's comeback, scoring 27 points and hitting a crucial three-pointer after a Patty Mills turnover to give Spain their first lead of the game. However, Mills, who scored 19 points, quickly responded with a three-pointer of his own. An 8-0 run by Australia effectively ended Spain's hopes, with Mills and Daniels sealing the victory with clutch three-pointers in the final seconds.

Dante Exum, who dislocated his finger in a warm-up game earlier in the week, did not play but remained with the team in a supportive role, indicating that he may still contribute later in the tournament. Matthew Dellavedova received extended playing time, while Duop Reath was not activated for the game.

Australia's next game is against Canada on Tuesday (2130 AEST), followed by their final pool match against Greece in Lille on Friday. This strong start against Spain has set a positive tone for the Boomers as they aim for Olympic glory.
